Awakening of the conscience when faced with injustice (“A Cloud in Trousers”), unleashing uncomfortable emotions that we keep bottled up (“Near Gone”), the uncomfortable role of spectators passively watching a bad performance (“This Work about the Orange”), the uncomfortable status of employees on the lowest corporate position (“Slipped Disk”), survival of workers in illegally privatized industrial towns (“Zrenjanin”), debates regarding the roles of women/men in the modern world (“Queendom”, “Macho Men”), the irreversible passing of time and comfortable day-to-day routine (“tempus fugit”, “KA-F-KA”), traces of politics and wars on interpersonal relations (“Our Class”), the rights of the LGBT community (“Coming Out. Homage to P. P. Pasolini”), the familiarity of a town we call “home” (“Our Town”), nationalism and patriotism in the digital world (“Jami District”, “A Play with…”) – these are some of the themes brought by TESZT 2018, who will challenge its audience to come out of its dormancy time. THE REVOLUTION BEGINS – as actors in Subotica say – when we are not cowards and speak out the truth.

The TESZT 2018 selection talks rationally about our surrounding reality, issues which have not been solved by modern society, offering the time to become emotional, find our vulnerable spots – in order to keep falling in love with theatre. Like earlier editions, we chose productions which can be intriguing, interesting and critically stimulating for the audience, even with two hours of pure comedy. TESZT finds us hidden behind comfortable habits, the well-known routine, jaded due to the numerous daily injustices we passively witness – and challenges us to think about and reshape our reality.

The festival will welcome again the Koreja Theatre from Lecce, performers Ivo Dimchev and Marco Chenevier, “Ioan Slavici” Arad Classical Theatre, „Kosztolányi Dezső” Subotica Theatre and Szkéné Budapest Theatre, theatre directors Kokan Mladenović, Boris Lijesević, Kárpati Péter. First-time participants at TESZT are, among others, “Tosa Jovanović” Zrenjanin National Theatre, Oriantheatre from France, the British group Two Destination Language and Qendra Multimedia from Priština, Kosovo.

This year’s edition includes 25 performances taking place in the Theatre’s Main Hall and Studio Hall, as well as the Military Circle and open spaces: apart from the best performances recently produced in the Danube-Cris-Mures-Tisa Euroregion, TESZT invited performances of public theatres and independent groups from Bulgaria, Germany, France, Holland, Italy and Great Britain. With different approaches of comfortable and uncomfortable positions we find ourselves in family relationships, workplace environment, with ourselves, sexuality or the passing of time, but most particularly our own personal freedom – productions invited for TESZT 2018 guarantee eight days with statement-theatre which is vitally necessary in a world suffocated by impersonal, easy-to-swallow entertainment.

After the first ten editions, the festival team had to re-group in order to face new challenges and the growing number of invited performances. From these changes, we need to take into consideration experiences which will help the festival grow continuously. The new TESZT stage will last as long as the audience will be interested in the festival – and earlier editions have proved that we are not lacking in spectators, but we need more seats, bigger theatre halls and more efficient funding.
